Work up 12 bows, or as many bows as you made boxes for.  I prefer the plain bows the best, however you can vary this pattern by making them striped or adding bits of color changes to make dots.

Row 1:  SC in 2nd CH from hook, SC in next 3 CH spaces, CH1, turn work. (4SC)

Row 2 through 16: SC in each stitch across, CH1, turn work. (4SC)

To finish off the bows you will need a dot for each gift made.  With desired color make a MR, CH1,

Round 1: SC 6 times into the ring, tighten ring. (6SC)

Round 2: SC twice in each stitch, SS to first stitch of the round, fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. (12SC)

2 rounds to complete the dot for the bow.

Assemble:

Now that we have all the pieces you will need to attach the bows, and circles, and add a border.

  1. Using the Surface Slip Stitch technique, place and slip stitch the bow to the box.  You will start from the bottom (keeping six spaces on each side open will keep it centered), work up to row 16, SS across the top and down the other side.
free crochet pattern - christmas gift garland
Leaving 6 holes on each side begin SS up one side.
free crochet pattern - christmas gift garland
SS until you reach the top of the box.

    SS across the top.

SS back down the other side.

    Bow attached.
  2. Add a border, begin with a standing SC in the bottom right corner, SC in each row, 3SC in corner stitch, SC across the top 5 times, working into the bow, SC in each row, 3SC in corner, SC 4 times across the top, 3 SC in corner, SC down each row, SC into left side of bow in each row, 3SC in corner, 4SC across the top, 3SC in last stitch, SC in each row until your reach the box, SC in the next 5 stitches, 3 SC in corner, SC in each row, 3SC in corner, SC across the bottom, be sure crochet through both the bow and bow when you reach the bow, finally add 2SC in the same stitch you started, SS to first stitch, fasten off and weave in ends.
free crochet pattern - Christmas Gift Garland
Border around the bow added, basically crochet in each exposed stitch/row, making sure to add 3SC in corners.
free crochet pattern - Christmas Gift Garland
Be sure to go through both pieces of fabric when crocheting were the bow meets the box.

    Border added.
  3. Finally, center the circle just below where it splits off and sew into place.

Place and sew dot to finish.
  4. Block your pieces to ensure they stand up straight.

I got a little carried away with my colors. 🙂

Finish Up:

Now all that’s left is straining them up to make a garland.

With any color CH50, working behind the bow, *SS in the 2 middle spaces that are untouched from row 16 on the box, CH25,* repeat until all boxes are added, after the las SS and CH25 are done add another 25CH’s, fasten off and weave in ends.

Begin with CH50, should be about a foot in length.
