It’s June’s Reader’s Choice winner, earrings.  This pattern set includes a set of four beach themed earrings; sunglasses, flip-flops, beach hat, and beach ball.  These earrings are full of color and are a great way to use up your crochet thread stash.  Add your own spin and mix up your colors, or change your hook and yarn and make an appliqué for a banner or project.

Finished Size:

Beach Ball – 1in. by 1in.

Sunglasses – 1 1/2in. by 1/2in.

Hat – 1 1/14in. by 1 1/14in.

Flip Flops – 1in. by 1/2in.

Supplies:

  • Aunt Lydia’s size 10 crochet thread
    • White
    • Aqua
    • Black
    • Dark Royal
    • Golden Yellow
    • Hot Pink
    • Myrtle Green
    • Violet
    • Victory Red
  • 1.5mm hook
  • needle for sewing
  • 8 fish-hook earrings
  • needle nose pliers
  • very small amount of stuffing

Stitches:

CH – Chain

sl st – Slip Stitch

SC – Single Crochet

HDC – Half Double Crochet

DC – Double Crochet

MR – Magic Ring

Slip Knot

Notes:
  • Make 2 of each pattern for a set.
  • Some instructions include photos where the pattern was done in larger yarn with a larger hook, to assist in seeing the stitches better.
  • Do not sl st rounds unless indicated.
  • * from * indicates a repeated sequence.
  • Sunglasses are made with 2 circles joined with a border in 1 round.
  • A stitch marker helps keep track of rounds when making the hat.
  • The beach ball is worked in rows then sewn to shape.

Flip Flops:

With Violet CH7,

Round 1: SC in 2nd CH from hook, SC in the next 4CH spaces, 3HDC in the next stitch, begin working on the other side of the chain; SC in the next 4 stitches, 2SC in the same stitch as beginning stitch, sl st to first stitch. (11SC, 3HDC)

Round 2: CH1, 2SC in same stitch, SC in the next 4 stitches, 2HDC in the next stitch, 3HDC in the next stitch, 2HDC in the next stitch, SC in the next 4 stitches, 2SC in the next 2 stitches, sl st to the beginning stitch of the round, fasten off and weave in ends. (14SC, 7HDC)

Round 2 complete.

With yellow, make a slip knot and set aside. With the right side facing locate the 2nd SC from the start of your HDC stitches.  This can be on either side of the flip-flop, I started on the left side.

Round 3: Insert your hook into stitch, pull slip knot through stitch, sl st in each stitch around, sl st in first stitch made, CH 3, sl st in the center HDC stitches from round one, CH3, sl st in stitch directly across from beginning stitch, fasten off and weave in ends.

Here’s what you should have.

Sunglasses:

With black MR,

Round 1: 6SC into MR. (6SC)

Round 2: 2SC in each stitch around, sl st to first stitch, fasten off, weave in ends. (12SC)

Make 1 more for a total of 2 black circles/lens.

With aqua, join in any stitch of 1 circle/lens, CH1,

Round 3: 2SC in same stitch as join, SC in next stitch, 2SC in next stitch, DC in next stitch, 2DC in next stitch, SC in next stitch, *2SC in next stitch, SC in next stitch,* 3 times, CH2, being careful to not twist, sl st to any stitch on the 2nd circle/lens, CH1, 2SC in same stitch, 1SC in next stitch, *2SC in next stitch, 1SC in next stitch,* 2 times, SC in next stitch, DC in the same stitch, DC in the next stitch, DC in the next stitch, SC in the same stitch, SC in the next stitch, 2SC in the next stitch, SC in last stitch, sl st in CH2 spaces, sl st to first stitch of round, (this is the stitch that started with the first circle/lens.), fasten off and weave in ends. (30SC, 6DC, 2CH)

Sun Hat:

With yellow, MR,

Round 1: 6SC into ring. (6SC)

Round 2: 2SC in each stitch around. (12SC)

Round 3 and 4: SC in each stitch. (12SC)

Round 5: *2SC in first stitch, SC in next stitch,* 6 times. (18SC)

Round 6: SC in each stitch around. (18SC)

Round 7: *2SC in first stitch, SC in next stitch,* 9 times. (27SC)

Round 8: SC in first stitch, *2SC in next stitch, SC in next 2 stitches,* 8 times, 2SC in next stitch, SC in last stitch. (36SC)

Round 9: *2SC in first stitch, SC in next 3 stitches,* 9 times, fasten off and weave in ends. (45SC)

Make the tie, with pink CH40, fasten off weave in ends.

Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from hook,HDC in the next 2 CH spaces, DC in the next CH space, HDC in the next 2 Chain spaces, SC in last CH space, CH1, turn work. (2SC, 4HDC, 1DC)

Row 2: SC in first stitch, HDC in next 2 stitches, DC in next stitch, HDC in next 2 stitches, SC in last stitch, changing to blue, CH1, turn work. (2SC, 4HDC, 1DC)

Row 3: SC in first stitch, HDC in next 2 stitches, DC in next stitch, HDC in next 2 stitches, SC in last stitch, CH1, turn work. (2SC, 4HDC, 1DC)

Row 4: SC in first stitch, HDC in next 2 stitches, DC in next stitch, HDC in next 2 stitches, SC in last stitch, changing to white, CH1, turn work. (2SC, 4HDC, 1DC)

With the right side facing out, fold the piece and whip stitch the last and first rows together.

With white, MR,

Round 1: 6SC into MR. (6SC)

Round 2: 2SC in each stitch around, fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. (12SC)

Ball Assembly:
  1. Squish the ball flat so that the opening is in the center.

  2. Place one circle over opening and stitch to ball.

  3. Stuff ball.

  4. Place 2nd circle over opening and stitch onto ball closing shut.

    Here’s what you should have.

Assemble:

Each earring set uses a fish-hook earring stud and works in the same manner.

  1. With your pliers and earring, gently pull the loop open towards you.

  2. Hook the loop through any stitch on your earring, making sure the earring will face forward.

  3. With your pliers gently push the opening closed.

To make these patterns as bunting or for an appliqué project simple substitute any yarn and hook, the ones pictured here used medium weight yarn with a 6mm hook.
