Summer is full of beauty and sunshine, and bears too… This summer is no different as I wonder around up here in Alaska I see evidence of bear tracks almost everywhere I go (I don’t leave my 5 mile radius much), so I must crochet it right!  This pattern uses Tunisian crochet stitches and combines the mitered squares ever so carefully with no sewing required!  These pot holders are double layered, so they are sure to be sturdy for any job.  The bear claw pattern is nothing new, quilters have been doing it for years, this Tunisian stitch along with Lion Brand Kitchen Cotton truly make these bear claws a thing of beauty.  I chose summer colors to celebrate the end of the season, and of course it’s always a good time to be patriotic.

2nd Layer:

The second Layer is just one large Mitered square using all Vanilla, you will complete this just as the starting square only your CH is larger and you do not need to switch colors.  To save internet space I did not write this square out as detailed.

With Vanilla, CH61,

Complete your forward and reverse passes a total of 30 times, your after your first complete pass you should have 61 CH on your hook, from there you reduce each row by two in the center stitch.  So for row 2 you want 29, loops on your hook, then decrease, then 29 more loops, row 3 will be 28 loops, decrease, 28 more loops, and so on.

Finishing Up:

  1. With the right sides facing out line up the 2nd layer and your bear claw block.

  4. Place a loop for hanging, I like to do this in the end opposite from your final corner made.  To make the loop, complete 2SC in the first corner space, CH10, then 2SC in next corner space.
