Dread Head Beanie
Free Crochet Pattern
Here is my Dread Head Beanie crochet pattern, specifically designed for people with dreads or very thick hair (like myself). This was one of those AH-HA moments where your thinking of making something and BOOM! the end result is perfect with no pattern tweaking. But of course afterward I always think to myself something can be done differently. The very top button opens up and gives that extra room needed for big hair to make it through the top. I am so happy with this pattern, I kept my first beanie for myself. I hope you enjoy making it!
1 ball Lion Brand Landscapes (I’m using the color BOARDWALK)
4 large color contrasting buttons
Size USI9/5.50 MM crochet hook (I highly suggest using an inline hook, as it grabs the yarn better and tends to not split it either. I use Susan Bates.)
A sharp large sewing needle (for sewing in ends and sewing buttons on to the finished beanie)
1 1/2”x1 1/2” square equals 2 rows and 4 sts in dc
sl st- slip stitch
sc- single crochet
BLsc- back loop single crochet
hdc- half double crochet
BLhdc- back loop half double crochet
dc- double crochet
FLdc- front loop double crochet
BLdc- back loop double crochet
- Stitch count for the end of each row/round are in the [brackets]
- If you need any help with the foundation single crochet stitch and the folding single crochet stitch, you can click on the link under the stitch abbreviations for my photo tutorials for these stitches.

Row 3- ch 1, * dc 3 sts, dc inc * repeat from * to * 11 times, join with a sl st [60 dc sts]
(Now we will start working in rounds)

Round 2- ch 1, folding sc 60 sts, join with a sl st [60 folding sc sts]
Round 3- ch 1, BLdc 60 sts, join with a sl st [60 BLdc sts]
Round 4- ch 1, dc 60 sts, join with a sl st [60 dc sts]
Round 5- repeat round 1
Round 6- repeat round 2
Round 7- repeat round 3
Round 8- repeat round 4
Round 9- repeat round 1
Round 10- repeat round 2
Round 11- ch 1, BLhdc 60 sts, join with a sl st [60 BLhdc sts]
Round 12- ch 1, hdc in the 3rd loop 60 sts, join with a sl st [60 hdc sts]
Round 13- ch 1, sc in the 3rd loop 60 sts, join with a sl st [60 sc sts] end off and sew/weave in ends
Now you are almost finished, it’s time to sew on your buttons, I use them to hide the seam that runs down the side of the beanie. And of course the very top button is going to be functional because we made a button loop for it!
